I’m currently deciding on booking a trip to Barcelona for the Spanish GP in May. After that, I’m going to do a little road trip, hit some vineyards, and fly back from Lisbon. Rental car prices are actually pretty low (well, low compared to Ireland w/CDW), but I have some questions on what cars to choose. Or more importantly, which cars to avoid...
Renault Megane, BMW 1-series, Ford C-Max (is that a Focus?). Would the Audi A3 be a big jump? Surprised I don’t see many Golfs/Polos...loved the new one in Scotland last year.
Any suggestions?

Are you going to be carrying a lot? The C-Max is like a Focus MPV, so I don’t think you’d need that. I can’t see why you would need more space than a Megane/1-series/A3/Golf for two people and luggage (assuming it is two people). Also, I can’t see how you couldn’t have fun in any of these cars since they’re all competent, and I think the only way you can do better is if you get a hot version, but I doubt rental companies are carrying Megane 265s and GTIs. I’d imagine there’s plenty of interesting roads to drive on so... if they’re all the regular versions, I’d say just stick with a Golf.

Go to hertz and get whatever premium intermediate car they have. I always do that when I travel to Europe and was never disappointed (usually a DS5, Volvo V40, Audi A3) in Turbo Diesel flavor.

For five days, the BMW 1 is $145, the Megane $168, but the A3 jumps to $245. I’ll keep looking/comparing...thanks for the feeback.
I’m actually just going to be thrilled to be driving on the right side of the road with a stick shift. Too many trips in the US (auto-only) and the British Isles....

I’d say series 1, not sure why the Megane is more expensive but the 1 is definitely a driver’s car.

Bear in mind that you mightn’t actually get a choice though. Your Mégane or equivalent could be anything (although it’s quite often a Hyundai or maybe a Seat because Barcelona), ditto for anything premium.

The Megane will be considerably roomier, the BMW is RWD. Both have a capable chassis. Which one is faster depends on which engine you’ll get. Base diesel in the 2016 Megane is more powerful than the base diesel in the (heavier) BMW, in my market at least. The BMW might not have rear doors. The A3 certainly isn’t worth the premium.

Renault will be a disappointment. Their design is fantastic, but once you get rolling it will feel like you are in a barebones rental Dodge. They are extremely low spec’d, especially in terms of power. Unless you have your preferred rental company, look at e-sixt (they have the nicest brands), or Europcar (if you want to maximize your chances of getting a VW).

Yes, very good point. That’s why I’m comparing vouchers (Europcar/AutoEurope) vs directly going with someone like Hertz. At the very least, when I get to the counter I’ll have an idea what to ask/beg/bribe for.
